From 15–18 October 2024, Play Africa visited Silverfields Primary School in Krugersdorp, engaging 899 children from Grades 3 to 7 in an immersive science experience.
The programme featured a series of hands-on, interactive activity stations, designed to inspire curiosity and a love of space exploration:
- Portable Children’s Planetarium: The main attraction, giving students an immersive journey through the cosmos.
- Rocket Systems Makerspace: Children created recycled rocket ships using age-appropriate materials, combining creativity with problem-solving.
- Solar System Activity: A hands-on exhibit demonstrating the relative distances of planets from the Sun.
- The Constellations: Students learned to identify constellations and explored celestial objects, including spotting features on the Moon.
- The Moon Station: Children used telescopes or binoculars to observe and explore lunar features firsthand.
The Planetarium programme provided a memorable opportunity for students to engage with space science in a playful and educational environment, reinforcing Play Africa’s mission to bring interactive STEM experiences to children in communities across South Africa.
